Oh yeah, Ciaran, the sand that you were talking about is eroded sand (eroded from acidic volcanic rock). This is why it is white, like normal sand, since the volcanic rock is acidic it has a lighter colour then a basaltic lava. Normally, this happens at the end of the time of a volcano´s life.

Anyway, my god, we actually hiked from Chugchilan to Quilotoa and got lost in the crater. I guess when in too deep. But it was gorgeous!
