Hi Ciaran and Marianne,

Ruben (skypename: rmdijkstra) and Welmoed (skypename: welmoed.kronemeijer) are going to the Galapagos!! Tomorrow. We are still in Latacunga now after having doing the Quilotoa loop. Oh yeah, Ciaran, the sand that you were talking about is eroded sand (eroded from acidic volcanic rock). This is why it is white, like normal sand, since the volcanic rock is acidic it has a lighter colour then a basaltic lava. Normally, this happens at the end of the time of a volcano´s life.

Anyway, my god, we actually hiked from Chugchilan to Quilotoa and got lost in the crater. I guess when in too deep. But it was gorgeous!
Hope you are well?

cheers
Welmoed & Ruben

'Paddington Bear had travelled all the way from Darkest Peru when the Brown family first met him on Paddington Station. Since then their lives have never been quite the same…'

I meant to tell you Ciaran & Marianne, did you know that some believe Paddington Bear is fundamentally a tale about the difficulties facing the immigrant? See: paper by Angela Smith, 'Paddington Bear: A Case Study of Immigration and Otherness'...

Smarty Pants Angela explains, 'This paper seeks to explore issues of immigration and Otherness through a study of the first of Michael Bond's Paddington books. I will argue that this book and those which follow in the series, intended for a readership of young children, deal with the issue of immigration at a more subtle level than more recent books which are largely aimed at older children who, it is assumed, are better able to cope with the complex political and psychological issues involved. Paddington, as a series of books begun in the late 1950s, presents issues of anti-racism and `Otherness' which can be revealed through a close textual analysis of the introductory chapters of the first book in series, A Bear Called Paddington (1958)1, whilst also showing how the dominant culture retains its superior status.'

Gotta keep you up to date with some of the cultural references and connections between your current location & English literature.

You are in Peru I take it.

Jeez i'm busy here. Actually, i am. Gotta go.

Oh Sweet Jesus. Ciaran, face it - whilst the Commodore will never win a Mitchelin Star, (the aroma of overboiled cabbage penetrates even the upper floors of the hotel, i admit), my guess is, you went overboard on the oul sauce during the night in question. And i ain't talkin HP.

Haha, I remember that; it was on Halloween night, wasn't it? Ciaran lying in bed groaning while the Goats of Hell played 'God Give Rock and Roll To You' in a vain attempt to rouse him...

Well my stomach was fine until I had those dodgy baked beans at your feckin wedding (Note to everyone - avoid the Commodore Hotel Cobh) - since then I've been struggling to get back what marianne refers to as a pig's gut.

Seeing your beautiful face last night was a wonderful moment for me Ciaran.
God bless Skype for bringing us back together through the medium of web video.

Next time put some clothes on though, eh? My mother could have walked in.
